In my role of caring well for my family, I realized very early that it was most important for me to make it a priority to care well for me, first. With great intent, I rise early before my family to get myself ready mentally, physically and spiritually. Every day I get dressed. I choose to embrace my own identity and dress in comfortable, casual clothes that can transition with me from one role to the other and make me feel good, well prepared and ready for my tasks.
Most days, I also wear accessories. Getting dressed is something that has blessed me with great confidence to carry out the daily tasks before me with poise, grace and style. Though it is not a necessary thing since I homeschool and usually work from home, I do so because getting dressed is essential to my self-esteem and my well-being. It improves my mood, decreases negative self-talk, and helps me feel more comfortable in my own skin which sets a positive tone for my day.
Intentionally getting dressed increases my energy and motivation to complete tasks. I move through my day with ambition and purpose, eager to check things off on my Daily Planner Pages. I feel less scattered and more in control of my day. Because I am dressed, I readily accept virtual or in-person appointments and opportunities to connect with my community, family and friends.
Prioritizing myself is not selfish, it is a way to ensure I have the energy and mindset to care for myself, my family, and my business. It sets a boundary that signals self-love and the start of a productive, intentional day. It also sets a good example of self-awareness for my family.
