Even on Vacation, Self-Care is a Must

Vacations are good! Who doesn’t like time away from the normal hustle and bustle of life? I enjoy exploring new places, visiting with family and friends and just relaxing in a place where there are no responsibilities calling me. But even on vacation, daily self-care is a must.

I rise before the others, so I can prepare myself for the day spiritually, mentally and physically. I take time to engage witb the Bible and pray. Time away from my daily agenda gives me an opportunity to relax and enjoy my quiet time with the Lord without feeling hurried. When possible, I will even enjoy a cup of tea and light a candle. This truly sets the tone for my heart and mind to embrace the Lord and be refreshed and renewed in my spirit before engaging others.

Then, I choose a quiet place to stretch; if the space allows, I will also exercise. Though I don’t bring my hand weights on vacation, I do an adjusted version of my daily exercise routine. This helps to wake up my body and makes me feel energized and ready for the adventures of the day.

And last but not least, my daily routine includes 10 to 15 minute break from the world to just be alone. This is a nonnegotiable, even on vacation. Each day, I look for an opportunity to steal away from everyone to sit on the porch, patio or balcony for a breath of fresh air, weather permitting.

If not, I will take a slow walk in the quiet halls of the hotel or just find a quiet place to be alone. It gives me chance to be still, to pause from all expectations, activities and excitement. It’s a moment to be refreshed in the Lord.

Daily self-care involves intentional activities to support your physical, spiritual, mental and emotional wellbeing. Continuing my daily self-care on vacation is essential to maintain physical and mental balance, prevent burnout, and ensure the trip is rejuvenating rather than exhausting. It helps manage travel-related stress and keeps energy levels high for activities. It also prevents the need to recover from your vacation afterward.
