Time Alone Is a Must

Busy, busy, busy, as a homeschool mom, my life can be so busy that I find myself at wits end and yet I just keep going. Can you relate? I have many responsibilities, things that need my immediate attention and things that need my attention regularly. Too often, I extend myself until I feel overwhelmed. Finally, I came to the reality that I MUST pause, yes STOP and spend time alone regularly. Be it a few minutes, a few hours or a day alone, just me and the Lord. I must remember that taking good care of them begins with taking good care of me.

I make a sacrifice each morning and rise early, before my family so that I can begin my day alone, quietly. Starting each day peacefully with God helps me to maintain my mental, spiritual and emotional health. I even light an aromatherapy candle to set the mood in our bedroom. Creating a serene atmosphere that is inviting nurtures my soul.

As the day goes on, it is important for me to steal away to be refreshed in my heart and mind. I do so by going to my bathroom or even my bedroom for a few minutes of peace, time alone where no one is talking, when my not accessible.

After teaching and interacting with the boys all morning, I eat lunch by myself. When our children were younger, while they completed a lesson, I would make their lunch and then call them to kitchen to eat. I would then return to the schoolroom to eat lunch alone. Now, our children are capable of making their own lunch, so eating lunch alone is part of my daily routine. When the weather permits, I will even take a walk around the block to get some fresh air.

There are seasons in life when time alone is not easy to obtain. Since I know these times are necessary for me, I am adamant to steal away regularly even but for a few minutes. Though alone physically it is the presence of the Lord that revives me, sometimes just enough to make it through. Do have need of time alone in your busy day as a mom at home schooling or caring for your family?
