I’m His Mom

I’m a woman over fifty, a mother of 10 children and a Mawmaw to nine grandchildren, but to our tenth child, I am just “Mom”. This weekend, he and I were invited to a costume party for kids and their mom. Costume party? I was feeling like I’ve participated in holiday parties with children for the last thirty years, I’ll pass on dressing up for this one. When I asked Malachi what he thought, he said I should dress up. While we were out shopping for his costume, he began to make suggestions for what I could wear. I didn’t want to disappoint him. I let him help me put something together. He knows how much I love Fall, so he picked out this t-shirt. Tada, I am the Autumn Queen! Crowned with my head wrap, I represent the favorites of the season…apples, pumpkins, sweatshirts, donuts, s’mores and bonfires.

Malach was Lebron James in Space Jam, A New Legacy, facial hair and all!

The party was lots of fun! There were activities, coloring sheets and treat bag decorating. I think Malachi’s favorite was the games. He spent a lot of time playing Throw the Sticky Spider at the Web, a target game and Pin the Head on the Skeleton.

The best part of the day for both of us was the outdoor activities, especially the harvest egg search. The kids ran around the backyard looking for orange plastic eggs with friendly faces that looked like carved pumpkins. They were each filled with candy. I walked around and threw candy out in the yard to make sure everyone had an opportunity to find candy and fill their treat bag or bucket. I enjoyed watching Malachi’s excitement as he ran around gathering candy and then playing tag and hide-and-seek.

Today was yet another reminder of the importance of me being Malachi’s mom. The one who provides for him, protects him and participates in the activities of his life. The fact that he is number 10 of our 10 children does not matter to him. It isn’t and shouldn’t be a consideration for him. He is not a burden, he is a gift.
