Honor Who You Are

Homeschool Mama, remember you were created on purpose with purpose. You are fearfully, wonderfully and uniquely made just as you are. God was intentional with you, so honor who you are. As you consider this next school year take sometime to look back…journal your experiences. Be very specific about what worked and what did not work for you, not the children.

Pausing to journal and reflect really helps me to move forward gracefully.

Talk to your husband and consider his observations and input. Pray and listen for God’s guidance in His word and in your faith community. Continue to reflect and journal. Be honest with you about you.

With all that you have gathered about the previous school year, consider where you are in this season…mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Now, ask yourself, “What do I need to have joy, daily, as I train and educate our children?” Prioritize daily self-care. Create a routine that will refresh your heart, mind and body as you start your day. Be sure it consist of stretching, exercise, bible reading, journaling, personal grooming and getting dressed on purpose. When you begin your day with a sufficient amount of time alone to care for you, you will care for you children well.

Dressed for a day of teaching, running errand and meeting a woman for Coffee and Conversation.

Include at least two 20-30 minute breaks for time alone, just you and Jesus. This time can be spent sipping a cup of tea or laying down for a short nap or even engaging your hobby. Taking a brief pause is essential for you to be refreshed and avoid burnout.

When I take a 20-30 minute nap I always feel refreshed.

With consideration of your children’s learning style and individual needs, schedule your teaching according your strengths and weaknesses. If morning is not your best time of day, schedule subjects the children can do without your participation…literature, vocabulary, learning enrichment (practice or review). Schedule your teaching at the time of day that you are most energetic and engaging. Be intentional to choose a curriculum that compliments your family dynamics in this season. Perhaps you will need something that does not require a lot of hands on learning if you are nursing with toddlers or traveling and need to learn on the go.

Plan to connect regularly with other homeschool mamas for fellowship, encouragement and support. Put these dates on your monthly calendar. Together you can celebrate your wins and pray about your concerns. Regular engagement with your community will give you opportunities to give and receive, to sharpen one another with understanding, compassion and love.
