Restful Sleep

As a mama birthing, nursing and training up ten children, it was common for me to be awakened after laying down to sleep for the night. Sometimes, it was by a child in need other times it was my subconscious telling me there was things I could accomplish while the rest of my household was fast asleep. Oftentimes, I would spend several hours awake taking care of that which needed my attention then return to bed for a few short hours of sleep. Though my sleep time was shortened, I slept well because my mind was at rest.

Even with limited sleep, I will rise early. It doesn’t matter what has happened the night before, my mornings are very seldom compromised. Morning is the time of day when I can talk to the Lord without interruptions. It’s when I intentionally prepare my heart, mind and body. This devoted time with the Lord restores my soul and gives me strength, hope and joy to carry on.

Now that most of our children are grown and have moved out of our home, I no longer need to burn the candle at both ends. I can choose to stay up late working on a project or enjoying something on television. When I do, I find that not only am I tired, but I am also scatter brained. I rest better when I intentionally go to bed.

It just feels good to lay myself down on purpose. Most nights, I go to bed before 10:00 p.m. Having a nightly routine helps me to rest well.

😴 I complete the tasks necessary to make my mornings stress free.

😴 I shower which relaxes me and relieves me of stress.

😴 I review, update and adjust my Daily Planner.

😴 When I have things on my mind, I journal.

After completing my routine, I lay my body down, pray and (most nights) fall asleep peacefully.

Do you have an evening routine to promote restful sleep?

  1. Your words are encouragement to me because with young children, and at any stage in my life, my routine, evenings and mornings are important to me. Maybe I realize it even more because I have demands on me from my family and children of various ages. I love your perspective. When I fall off track, your words are a great reminder of how and why to get back on track. Thank you for sharing. I hope my words are an encouragement to you. God bless you and your family always!
