Though we have good intentions, oftentimes we go days, weeks and even months without picking up the Bible to read it. I must remind myself that it’s a privilege to be able to do so. Not everyone has access to the Word of God. I also must remember that reading the Bible is one of the most important ways God communicates to us. It’s humbling for me to recommit myself to reading the Bible regularly, yet again.
When making the commitment to read the Bible it is important to be realistic about your goals particularly the number of days of the week you will read. I suggest reading on the week days instead of everyday of the week. It is also important to choose when and where you will read. To make sure you are well prepared; gather the things you will need and put them in a basket near where you will sit. This will keep you from getting distracted or wasting the time you have set aside.
1 Begin with Prayer
2 Choose a book of the Bible to simply read, not study
3 Read with an open heart and mind.
4 Highlight any words or scriptures that stand out.
5 Write, journal what you learned, thought or felt.
6 Pause, sit still, close your eyes and reflect.
7 Pray as you end your time with Him.
8 Listen for the Lord to speak as you move forward…through His Word in your heart, through the Holy Spirit and through His people.
Remember, reading God’s word is not a have to…it’s a get to. It is an important part of our daily communication with Him. It’s a privilege. Engaging Him in this way helps us to know the Lord and grow closer to Him.
